At Giant Steps Tasmania improving students' literacy and communication skills is an important focus. We use the 4 Blocks Literacy Program to achieve this aim. The Four Blocks of the Framework are Guided Reading, Self-Selected Reading, Writing, and Working with Words and they represent four different approaches to teaching literacy. Daily teaching is provided in all four of the Blocks and this means that all students have the chance to learn to read and write in the way that best suits them. Many students at Giant Steps Tasmania are either non-verbal or find speech difficult. These students use Augmentative and Assistive Communication (AACs) devices.  These are aids such as picture and symbol communication boards and electronic devices that help students express themselves. The use of these devices means that non-verbal students are able to take part in the 4 Blocks program and that they, like their verbal classmates, can make progress.
