Early Learning – 2 groups, 15 minutes each

Children are able to maintain a set position during movement time with the help of markers on the floor.  They are becoming familiar with set routines and are able to follow musical cues without adult help.  Social dances and games have been introduced and are enjoyed.  Greetings and farewells are part of the established routine.

Green Group – 5-8 years, 30 minutes

There are two distinct areas of need in this group.  Some students are familiar with the dance class routine and are ready to move on. The newer students are beginning to join in and follow the more experienced students.  Routines are being slowly established with the latter group.  Most of the students have mastered the following: skipping, hopping, jumping, running, slow walking, following the leader and stopping on command.

Red Group – 8-12 years, 30 minutes or 2x20 minute sessions.

Several students in this group are able to take on the role of dance leader and lead some sections of the class.  Students enjoy a variety of dance games and activities e.g. facial expressions, name clapping, body shapes (individually or with a partner), musical games and acting out a story.

Blue Group – 12-18 years, 30 minutes

Greetings and farewell routine established.  Students take position for commencement of class routine without adult help.  All social dances are well presented. Some students are now able to take the on the role of dance leader.  All students are now able to participate in dance games with very little adult intervention.

Individual Students

These students usually need to settle into the atmosphere of the room with soft music.  Gentle routines using ribbons and scarves can then be introduced.  Some social dances are occasionally accepted e.g. Chicken Dance or Hokey Pokey.
